Welcome to 6th Penwortham Scout Group

6th Penwortham Scout Group is located in the South Ribble district of West Lancashire. Our meeting place is a wooden hut located behind St. Mary's Church Hall, opposite Penwortham Girls' High School, Cop Lane, Penwortham, Preston (a map can be found in the 'Where We Meet' section). We have an active group of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, and we also share our hut with Jackal Explorer Scout Unit. Now Explorer Scouts is district run, this makes a great opportunity for the Explorer group to link with Scouts. When our Scouts reach 14 years old, many of them continue into the Explorer group which has a growing number of young people. Being interlinked with the Explorer Scouts also gives a firm base for the leadership team and allows many Explorers the chance of completing the 'service' element of the Duke of Edinburgh Award by lending a hand at any of the section meetings.

Beavers - Friday, 6.15pm - 7.30pm
Cubs - Monday, 6pm - 7.30pm
Scouts - Thursday, 7pm - 9pm
Explorers - Wednesday, 7pm - 9pm

6th Penwortham and Jackal also have an active leadership team. We regularly hire out marquees around the county for scouting or non-scouting purposes. We are also responsible for leading the annual St. Mary's Church firework and bonfire extravaganza, as well as giving a helping hand for odd jobs and maintenance around the Church, Church Hall and Scout hut.

Equipment

Recently the group has been quite lucky in terms of finance. We have received grants from Lancashire County Council for a number of new items. These include a new trailer, 4 new bell tents and a Canadian open top canoe, as modelled by our beautiful assistants. The group also wishes to receive grants in order to carry out essential maintenance work to the hut, including disabled access and new toilet facilities. Also we now own a minibus which makes travelling to activities a whole lot easier.

We have recently appointed a group quartermaster due to the vast amount of equipment we have gained over the years. In our storage we have access to a wide variety of tents, including standard Icelandic Patrol tents, Niger's, Cooking/Mess tents and small, light backpacking tents. We own gas cooking equipment which is often used on outdoor camps, equipment for cooking on open fires, Tranjia stoves used for backpacking and a variety of lanterns which run on paraffin and petrol.

As mentioned above we have purchased a brand new Old Town Canoe. We also have access to a range of kayaks, both plastic and fibreglass. All our boats are tested in accordance with Scout policy. We provide high quality 'Yak' buoyancy aids in different sizes, paddles, helmets, and spray decks for those who are qualified to use them.

Qualifications

Currently we have four leaders who are qualified to take a number of Scouts canoeing on certain types of water. These leaders have gained their BCU 3*, foundation safety and rescue test and been assessed by a Scouting instructor. We also have a number of younger leaders and Explorer Scouts who will have reached the same standard shortly. This will enable us to take a greater number of young people on the water at the same time.

All of our leaders are over the age of 18 years old and complete a CRB check every 5 years in accordance with Scout protocol. Leaders are also required to undertake a certain amount of training before they receive their 'wood beads' (which you receive when you are a fully trained leader). Leaders also attend a first aid course at least every 3 years to a minimum of first response. However we do have leaders who hold a higher first aid certificate (from their place of work etc)

Minibus drivers all hold a MiDAS license and are fully insured.

Camp Sites

We primarily use West Lancashire Scouts camp sites which are Great Tower, Waddecar and Moor Crag. However we do on occasion visit other camp sites in the region including Tawd Vale, Bowley, Pull Wyke and Silverdale. The Links to the main camp sites can be found on the links page.
